The date that doesn't move
Unlike Easter or Thanksgiving, Christmas is fixed to a calendar date rather than to a weekday, so the only thing that changes year to year is which day it lands on. That single fact is why it is the most counted-down date in the world: everyone is counting to the same instant, and has been since long before anyone had an app to do it with.
When people actually start counting
Retail starts in September and nobody believes it. The point where counting becomes normal rather than eccentric is roughly the hundred-day mark, in mid-September, and it becomes universal on 1 December when the first door of an advent calendar opens. An advent calendar is a countdown — a physical one, with chocolate, invented centuries before the word existed.
Counting to it properly
The useful part of a Christmas countdown is not December. It is October, when there is still time to do something with the answer: book the travel while it is affordable, order the thing that ships slowly, take the leave before someone else does. A countdown that only becomes visible in the last fortnight has told you nothing you could act on.
