A date defined by another date

Black Friday has no date of its own. It is defined as the day after US Thanksgiving, which is itself the fourth Thursday in November — so it lands somewhere between the 23rd and the 29th depending on the year. Any countdown that hardcodes a date will be wrong in most years.

The day stopped being a day

The name once described a single Friday of queues outside shops. It now covers most of November, with deals opening weeks early and running through Cyber Monday. The useful thing to count down to is therefore rarely the Friday itself — it is the point at which the thing you are actually waiting for gets discounted, which is usually earlier.

Counting down to a purchase
